5 Things to Consider When Picking a Preschool

Choosing a preschool is one of the most important decisions that you will make for your child’s future. It is the first step in your child’s academic journey and involves selecting an environment that can help them create a love of learning. We know it can be over That being said, there are a lot of things to think about and look for in a school.

Here is a list of the top 5 things you need to consider:

  1. Trust your instincts.

Your gut instincts are there for a reason. Trust them. You should feel comfortable leaving your child with the staff and feel comfortable all day long. If your gut is telling you that something feels off, ask more questions, speak to the parents of children who attend, or look for other options.

  2. Choose a school that can/will accommodate your child’s needs.

Every child’s needs are different and every child’s learning style is different. Make sure to ask specific questions about how they can accommodate your child’s needs, her/his individuality, and personality. Your concerns should matter to them because your child matters, so don’t be afraid to gather all the information you need to know your child will be taken care of in the way they need.

  3. Look for a school where the kids and teachers are smiling and interacting with each other.

It is so important to have teachers and students creating positive relationships with each other and wanting to spend time with each other. It’s great to see children having fun while learning and that often happens when they are interacting with teachers that truly love what they do. If the teachers enjoy teaching, your kids will most likely love learning from them!

  4. Cleanliness.

Use your senses! Does it smell and look clean? Are the kids dirty? Does it look like they are all sick? What is the overall presentation of the school? Make sure that the environment that your child is in is clean and healthy. Your child is inevitably going to get sick while in school, but make sure that the school is helping to prevent it as much as possible. Feel free to also ask questions as to their routines and policies around keeping the environment and the kids as clean and healthy as possible.

  5. Curriculum.

Here are some questions to ask: What are they learning? Is it creative? Are they focusing on worksheets or doing a variety of activities? Is the curriculum geared for each child’s needs? The school should have an engaging curriculum that keeps the children interested and eager to participate. And you’ll want to see a curriculum that is developmentally appropriate for each age group.
